During its Winter/Spring season, the Janos Gat Gallery focuses on contemporary art in Berlin with a series of exhibitions, From Berlin.

“In Berlin, the modes of individual and collective experience of the past intersect with those of the future. Costantino Ciervo's installations make the points of their intersection visible in ways that challenge notions about politics, culture, science, technology and human nature. The works presented here engage in a critical dialogue with contemporary German and European reality.”

Costantino Ciervo's installation of video objects and drawings (January 16 - February 17) will be followed by an exhibition of MK Kähne (March 8 - April 7).

Europe's most vibrant art scene will be further explored in a survey of important works by its acknowledged progenitor, the quintessential Berlin artist, Wolf Vostell (April 10 - May 12).

During the late Fifties and early Sixties, the American sculptor James Metcalf was recognized as one of the most promising artists of his generation. “His blend of Surrealist imagination with the purely formal improvisations of the Lyrical Abstractionists should gain him the admiration of both camps. In the post-Picasso generation, only the painters Arshile Gorky and Matta have been sufficiently agile, and stubbornly enough committed to their own distinct brand of vision, to bring off this difficult feat.”

(Sam Hunter, 1957)

Since 1967 James Metcalf has lived and worked in Santa Clara del Cobre, Mexico, where he revived a pre-Columbian copper forging technique, teaching it to local artisans. The sculptures on exhibit, created with AutoCAD on the computer and executed by hand, are examples of how his latest work combines ancient forging with contemporary design. James Metcalf's last New York exhibition took place at the Albert Loeb Gallery in 1964. The present exhibition coincides with “Copper, Stone and Fire: James Metcalf, Anna Pellicer and the Artisans of Santa Clara del Cobre” at the Spanish Institute (February 15th - March 30th).
